Safety in Practice: Lightning & Thunderstorm Safety
Colorado weather can change quickly, especially during the summer. On construction sites, a storm that seems far away can become a serious hazard in minutes.
A few simple practices can help teams respond early:
✅ Stop outdoor work when thunder is heard or lightning is nearby
✅ Move to a grounded building or fully enclosed vehicle
✅ Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning before returning to work
A helpful rule to remember: If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck.
Taking a few extra minutes to pause work is always worth it when it helps everyone get home safely.
