Executive Chairman

Tom McLagan

As Executive Chairman, Tom approves and monitors Hyder’s strategies and policies, evaluates the performance of the company, and supervises the management of the company. He also assists the President, Matt Huelskamp, in strategic areas as requested. Tom is responsible for overall accountability to shareholders and other stakeholders.

Tom learned the construction business the old-fashioned way — from the ground up. Working every summer as a laborer during college, he gained valuable hands-on experience on a variety of projects, including residences and large commercial facilities. After graduating from the University of Colorado, he worked as a construction foreman in Colorado and California. In 1987, he joined his father, Neil, in the purchase of Hyder. Tom was President of Hyder from 1998-2018.

During his tenure at Hyder, Tom has participated in many industry related organizations including the Downtown Denver Partnership, Santa Fe Business Improvement District Board, University of Colorado Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board, and the Metro Denver Economic Development Board. He was also president of the Associated General Contractors of Colorado in 2007.

“I was very fortunate to be able to work with a seasoned superintendent early in my project management career who was an incredible planner.  He taught me the importance of being proactive instead of being reactive, and his lessons translated into Hyder being successful on many very difficult projects and the creation of some of our most important Loyal Customers.”

Life Outside Hyder

“I love riding my mountain bike or playing golf in the summer.  It’s a great way to be outside, active, and enjoying the beautiful Colorado scenery. I have a lovely wife of 26 years, Lisa, and two incredible daughters, Ali and Bailey, who are in college, and a black Labrador.  My parents and both of my brothers live in Denver.”
